Inspired by the river, beach and bushland that surrounds us, we’re committed to sustainability at The Monty. From onsite EV chargers to thoughtful solar energy use and low-impact amenities, small details add up to a stay that’s as considerate as it is comfortable.
We also love supporting the local community that makes this part of the Great Ocean Road so special. Wherever possible we work with local suppliers, makers and producers - celebrating the creativity and character of the Surf Coast.
It’s all part of creating a stay that feels connected to the place, the people and the laid-back coastal lifestyle that makes Anglesea unforgettable.
Acknowledgement
We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners and appreciate their ongoing custodianship of the land on which we are located, Kuarka Dorla (Anglesea River) on Wadawurrung Country.
Strategy
We have partnered with Rewild Agency to develop our Sustainability Strategy, identifying four key focus areas and developing a clear goal for each area.
1. SUPPLY CHAIN INTEGRITY
To conduct business in a way where our operations are supported by local suppliers who align with our values and allow us to reduce our environmental impact while increasing the social benefits.
2. WASTE MANAGEMENT
To design efficient waste management systems to reduce the amount of waste-to-landfill generated across Great Ocean Road Resort and take steps towards zero waste-to-landfill (2030/2035).
3. REGENERATION
To preserve the Great Ocean Road region for future tourists to enjoy and to increase levels of biodiversity within the venues we operate on.
4. ENERGY & GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
To take steps to become a net zero organisation by 2030 and increase energy efficiency throughout operations.
Responsible Design
The property was reimagined by the team at CeraStribley Architects. We leaned into the existing Palm Springs-style architecture of the motel, and upped the playfulness factor without expanding the existing footprint. Where possible we retained and replanted existing garden, overseen by the local landscaping team at Bellbrae Nursery.
A CELEBRATION OF STYLE
Our interiors are inspired by the cool Palm Springs aesthetic and the relaxed vibes of a sun-soaked Californian ranch, but tailored for the quintessential Aussie road trip. We sourced furnishings from Melbourne designers with a focus on small-batch makers including;

Fenton and Fenton, who consciously create long-lasting statement pieces that support artisans rather than strictly mass producing

Jardan, a carbon-neutral and B Corp certified designer focusing on a circular economy

The Plasticians, who created our coat hangers from recycled post-consumer plastic waste.
ARTWORK
Each room's artwork is one of four unique collages, commissioned for The Monty by That Paper Joint, in Melbourne’s quirky, creative hub of Brunswick. The B Corp-certified art studio embrace a holistic approach to ‘reuse, reinvent, and reimagine' through collage that turns secondhand materials into unique art.
On the property's exterior wall, facing Anglesea Surf Centre, is a mural by local Torquay artist Emily Wright of Ahki Illustration that captures the essence of The Monty.

Make Your Stay More Sustainable
The impacts of climate change are being felt around the world and here in our local region. Rising temperatures can contribute to more frequent and intense heatwaves, bushfires, storms, droughts, coastal erosion, and changes to ecosystems that support native plants and wildlife.
As visitors to this beautiful environment, you play an important role in helping reduce these impacts. Simple actions such as conserving water, reducing energy use, recycling correctly, choosing reusable items, and respecting natural habitats can make a meaningful difference.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Please separate waste using our in-room bins for general waste, food scraps, and recycling. We also avoid single-use plastic where possible, so you'll also find 500mL bulk dispense bathroom amenities from The Herbalist Apothecaire, which are gentle on your skin and the Earth.
WATER CONSERVATION
You can opt out of daily room servicing if not required, or reuse your towels by leaving them hung up during room servicing. You can also limit shower times or water usage to conserve water.
SUPPORT LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
We encourage guests during their stay to check out the resources provided by ANGAIR (Anglesea and Aireys Inlet Society for the Protection of Flora and Fauna). They host working bee days which you can get involved in, or biodiversity walks to learn about the natural environment surrounding us. We encourage guests during their stay to support the local economy, artists and their culture. We are located on Wadawurrung Country. Booln Booln Cultural Centre is a space for everyone - where stories, language and culture come to life. Here you’ll find beautiful jewellery, artwork, weaving, clothing, books and cultural gifts that carry real meaning. Every item has a story behind it that carry stories and designs of Aboriginal makers. Every purchase supports artists and creators, many of them local. You are not just buying something to take home, you are supporting culture to thrive.

Flora and Fauna
Anglesea is known for its stunning natural landscapes. With Point Addis Marine Park and The Great Otway National Park at your fingertips, the area is home to various bird species and native wildlife, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts. In Spring, the surrounding heath comes alive with stunning wildflowers and orchids.
Whether you're hiking through the heath or strolling along the river, Anglesea is ideal for adventures into the great outdoors.
Wildlife spotting? Eastern Grey Kangaroos roam freely, especially around the Anglesea Golf Club and nearby walking tracks. Kangaroo tours are available at the golf club. And birdlife is abundant for birdwatching enthusiasts. Coogoorah Park is a great place to start! Please admire wildlife from a distance and avoid feeding them.
